The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

by Washington Irving. An early American story, adapted and directed by Peter Gould.

Peter says, "Sleepy Hollow is one of the first great Colonial American folk tales. Set in the rolling hills and dark hollows of the Hudson River valley, it's exciting and mysterious, with four memorable legendary characters: the awkward singing schoolmaster Ichabod Crane, the wealthy land-owner Balt Van Tassel, his blooming daughter--and only heir-- Katrina, and her suitor, the muscular braggart Bram Van Brunt. And there's a whole host of supporting townsfolk, farm animals, spirits, and school children."

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow will be story-theatre in the style of the two recent Kipling productions directed by Peter (Jungle Book and Just So) with the young ensemble doing all the chorus parts, physical moves, sound effects, dances, scary illusions, and general rural one-room schoolhouse mayhem.
Don't miss this energetic fun-filled hour of youth theatre, right in the middle of cabin fever days!

Raising Our Voices is a new production, written and performed by the NEYT Theatre Adventure Adult Troupe, demonstrating their commitment to speaking out, telling their stories, and highlighting their abilities as performers.

Original songs, familiar music, dancing, acting, singing, adaptive equipment, sign language, and projections help to tell the story of this dynamic, diverse, and talented Troupe of actors.

The fourteen Troupe Members speak about their lives in a group poem, “Here I am!” They bring to life the importance of friendship in five vignettes. Pantomime, recorded voices, and projected images create a montage of the Troupe Members engaged in their community.

At Theatre Adventure Program (TAP) any ideas you may have had about traditional theatre and the creative process will be challenged and your heart will be inspired. Founded in 2004, TAP has established itself as a dynamic theatre class at New England Youth Theatre for students with mixed abilities. Disabilities become possibilities at Theatre Adventure.

The Lion, the Witch and  the Wardrobe

Adapted from the novel by C.S. Lewis, directed by John Hadden

The four Pevensie children, evacuated from London to safety in the English countryside during the Blitz in 1940, unexpectedly discover a parallel universe, a remarkable land called Narnia. Myth and magic become everyday experience, as our young heroes explore their new world.  Menace lurks too, in the person of the evil White Witch, who has doomed Narnia to perpetual winter.

We are pleased and excited that John Hadden, the newest member of the NEYT faculty, will be joined by a cast of talented young performers to present this classic tale.  Everyone loves a good story--join us for The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, one of the best!

Upcoming:  JAZZ

This script and score will have an initial public appearance during Salmagundi week - on Monday, May 10th. Actors will be given an opportunity to audition for roles in this workshop - TBA

Jazz is a musical play written by NEYT Founder and Artistic Director, Stephen Stearns and Vermont Jazz Center Artistic Director, Eugene Uman currently being workshopped for a 2011 production.

Set in November, 1956 in and around Greenwich Village, New York City, Jazz is a celebration of the power of music to transform and heal, set against the explosive backdrop of the 1950’s: the Russian Communist threat and H Bomb terror, the emerging

Civil Rights movement, the dynamic musical shift in jazz from Dixieland and swing into Bebop and Free Jazz, the growth of television, the emergence of beat poetry and avant-garde art, and the agony of adolescent loneliness.

Jazz tells the story of a city high school ruled by fear and intimidation: a paranoid, abusive history teacher, an ex-Marine dictator/principal and a territorial greaser gang led by rock ‘n roller, Eddie Nalon, and his Nightriders. In the midst of this volatile environment, four alienated, teens - Judy (aka Jazzlyn) a poet-singer; Jake, a jazz pianist, Chano, a street kid who drums on cardboard boxes for nickels, and Chester Quinn, a blossoming bebop sax player - meet and discover friendship through playing music together.

In retaliation for the abuse they suffer at the hands of the greasers, Jazzlyn, Jake, Chano and Chet invade Hudson High with their new Latin Jazz groove. A battle of the bands erupts - Jazz vs. Rock - and all hell breaks loose. Jazz is loaded with action, comedy, suspense and toe-tapping rhythms – a relevant tragedy honoring the resilience of the human spirit to triumph over fear.
